We are delighted that once again a local theatre group is putting on a show with strong LGBT+ themes. Visibility and representation are so important, and the links between the queer community and theatre go way back in time.

Back in 2022 we arranged a group visit to go and see Kinky Boots, which was put on by the Yeovil Amateur Operatic Society. At the time, they were one of the first Amateur groups in the country to stage the show. Unfortunately the show we had booked tickets for was cancelled due to Covid, although some of us managed to arrange to exchange our tickets for another performance and still got to see their amazing rendition.

This year Castaways are putting on Everybody’s Talking about Jamie. As the drama group is for school-aged young people, they are staging the Teen Edition of the musical at Westlands Entertainment Venue.

Jamie New is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. Jamie doesn’t quite fit in. Jamie is terrified about the future. Jamie is going to be a sensation. Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.

We will be supporting Castaways by bringing together the LGBT+ community from Yeovil and the surrounding areas to come and watch their production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie on Saturday 1st June 2024. You can buy your tickets for the show from the Westlands website. Make sure you choose the right time to join us – we’re going for the final performance at 7pm. If you already have plans or can’t make then, it you don’t have to miss out; the show is running for 4 performances from 30th May – 1st June.

What an amazing way to kick of Pride Month! And if that wasn’t enough fun for one evening, you can join others from the local queer community for some pre-show drinks in the Lounge Bar at Westlands. Yeovil Diversity Project will be there, and we’d love to see you there too. We’ll be meeting from 5:30pm so that we get to socialise before the performance starts at 7:00. Let us know you’re coming via the Facebook event so we know to save you a seat
